We speak portuguese, not spanish!!!

It's funny how something as simple as the language we speak affects our culture and is part of our identity. Here in Norway, when we you say you are from Brazil, they soon think that you speak Spanish and if who made the question speaks Spanish (some of them learn Spanish in school) begins to speak Spanish with you, as if is your mother tongue. To ilustrate, some real situations:

Situation 1: First day at school where we are taking norwegian classes here in Stavanger, library searching for books for the class. The lady in the library desk started a conversation in Norwegian with me and Bruno, despite of the fact that we were there to pick up a book to learn Norwegian, which means that we do not know much of the language. The language problems solved, and as for the other students, she was supposed to give to us, togheter with the books, a dictionary: Norwegian-mother language. Explain that we are from Brazil, then came the question: Oh, Spansk? (Spanish?) The response: Nei, nei, ikke Spansk, Portugisisk! (No, not Spanish, Portuguese). Finally, as they didn't have a Norwegian-Portuguese dictionary, we got the books and went to classroom.

Situation 2: In the class: Teacher starts a conversation in Norwegian with us. Question: Hva kommer du fra? (where are you from?) Answer: Jeg kommer fra Brazil! (I come from Brazil!) oh, så snakker du Spansk! (Ah, then you speak Spanish!) - Nei, Portugisisk !!!!!!! (no, Portuguese!) I'm telling here only two of the many times people here asked me or the other Brazilians if speak Spanish ... If they study only a little of the history of South America, they'd know of Treaty of Tordesillas, which divided South America between Spain and Portugal: Portugal stayed with Brazil and Spain with other countries ... so we speak Portuguese (we were colony of Portugal, that's why!) and they speak Spanish (They were Spain's colony) ... simple as that! To all norwegians that think we speak Spanish in Brazil, I say: VI SNAKKER IKKE SPANSK, VI SNAKKER PORTUGUESE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!(we do not speak Spanish, we speak Portuguese!)
